A couple of months ago I was on LinkedIn scrolling through the posts and I stumbled on this cool concept for completing my professional development hours. It is an application called LumiQ. This application contains several podcasts discussing various topics from the business and accounting world. This is definitely better than sitting in a room all day learning about the same topics every year. As well, in Windsor, Ontario we do not get the same variety of courses and would need to travel 2 to 4 hours to get something different or take a webinar online.
The first time I decided to try the application, was when I was converting my youngest daughter’s crib into a bed. Honestly, listening to that podcast didn’t feel like I was taking a professional development course. The podcasts are modular and have a multiple-choice question to prove that you were listening at the end of the module. These podcasts can range from half an hour to a little over an hour in length.
The other big draw to LumiQ is the fact I can listen to podcasts in the car. I spend about 45 minutes driving on a workday so this has turned into a great time to listen to a podcast. Some of my favorite topics so far have discussed the running of a cloud accounting practice, US tax issues, the running of a professional sports league and how to market your product or service.
If you are a CPA or another business professional that needs to meet certified professional development requirement then this may be a great solution for you especially if your time is precious like mine.
