Looking to the Future
When I first arrived at Gerald Duthie in November 2010 I was hoping to rediscover my passion for public accounting with a change in scenery. At the time, I was debating about making a transition to industry as I had always been in public accounting since I graduated high school in 1998. However, the partners at Gerald Duthie welcomed me in as a senior accountant with open arms. They challenged me with new tasks, allowed me to manage engagements and supported me with my decision to enroll in a course to obtain my public accounting license. This was a significant time and financial commitment especially with a baby on the way. Three weeks after Kylie was born I had to travel to Toronto to write the exam (two six-hour sittings a day apart), which I passed.
This lead to my increased role as a manager at the firm. I was now performing detailed reviews of various annual filings and I started mentoring junior staff. As well, this gave me the confidence to start accepting clients of my own. I started experimenting with cloud accounting applications which I grew to love due to how they make record keeping more efficient and accessible anywhere there is an Internet connection. I now have clients that are using these tools for their record keeping.
This Friday will be my last day at a Gerald Duthie. I thank the partners of the firm for their mentoring and support over the years. I cannot wait to begin the next chapter of my career.
