What is my role as a controller?

A lot of people don’t realize that in addition to my public accounting practice, I have also been employed as the controller of AutoMAXX for the last 6 months. AutoMAXX is a pre-owned car lot located in Windsor, Ontario and it also has two service garages known as ServiceMAXX.

So, what tasks do I perform as a controller on a daily basis at AutoMAXX?

Mondays involve preparing for the weekly payroll by ensuring everything is posted that pertains to the vehicles sold. I also assist with the inputting of service sales invoices and any repairs relating to in stock cars. Tuesdays involve commissioning the salespeople and on Wednesday I prepare the weekly payroll for the 30 employees.  Thursdays and Fridays vary from week to week. I could be working on the bank reconciliations, inputting new cars in the system or I could be posting deals.

Other daily tasks that I complete include preparing bank deposits, writing cheques and sending electronic funds transfers to vendors and handling petty cash. I also am involved in completing HST, PST, source deductions, EHT and WSIB returns. As you can see there are a lot of responsibilities as a controller. One of my future offerings for Oldridge Accounting is going to be virtual controller services which will be discussed in a later blog.
