What I learned from this tax season

April 30th marked the end of personal tax season for filers that are not self-employed. The majority of my tax returns have now been filed, which is a relief. This was my practice’s second tax season and I am always trying to find ways to improve the process. Here are a couple things that I learned this year…

“Time is precious!”, I found this out more so this year as I had less time on weekends to prepare returns as my three year old started to not take naps. I had to adjust my schedule to do a lot more work in the evenings when the kids were in bed. This also allowed me to spend more time with them.

I grew my self-employed personal tax client base with no additional advertising. This is something that I am really excited about as helping small businesses is the main focus of my practice. I gained my new clients via word-of-mouth and networking.

Taking mental breaks was very important to avoid burnout. There were some nights where I just was not motivated to work on returns and decided to relax on the couch. This allowed me to keep my energy level up with my controller position at Automaxx, family time and volunteer work.
